It’s interesting how people project their personal interests on the shooting in North Carolina. One senator points out it was an attack on Christians! Another reminds us the victims were mostly women. This kind of event which has become a frequent crisis is now being called terrorism! Without any doubt this was a stunning act of racism.
The suspect is another product of a racist society with an immature mind and access to a weapon. He killed nine outstanding citizens who have contributed daily to the community and the world around them.
Another racist attack shocks us to the core, brings us to tears, and enrages us! But what will we do about it other than punish the suspect? The public may demand ending violence but our elected leaders are not listening.
We have spent more time in denying our racism and very little in confronting it. It is the mindset of our long and negative heritage. We have created a culture that is divided into THE OTHER – anyone not like us. We are breeding racism, sexism, genderism and political divides.
Were there signs of the suspect’s racist and mental instability that were obvious and unaddressed? We have a critical mental health issue in this country. If you are mentally ill you are likely to wind up in jail where 60% or more suffer from some form of mental illness. Privatized prisons have become a profitable warehouse for those we are neglecting to provide treatment.
When our Founding Fathers (note men!) wrote the 2nd amendment they were assuring, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms…” The Second Amendment was drafted to provide for the common defense and the general welfare of the United States through the ability to raise and support militias. They were also using muskets and cannons at the time and mass public murders were not happening. And yet interpreting the right to bear arms continues to destroy innocent people and communities. What about our “unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness?”
We are without a doubt THE most armed and violent of all civilized nations in the world. In fact, can we still identify with the word “civilized”?
Firearm injury data from the World Health Organization and guns per capita data from the Small Arms Survey identified the United States has more guns and gun deaths than 27 developed countries. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2013/09/19/u-s-has-more-guns-and-gun-deaths-than-any-other-country-study-finds/
We uphold a myth of needing guns for self-defense while guns are killing more women than protecting domestic violence victims. 2 year-olds are picking up guns and shooting. Extreme you say?
The National Crime Victimization Survey shows that for the five-year period 2007 through 2011, 2,755,400 people were victims of fatal and nonfatal firearm violence. The total number of self-protective behaviors involving a firearm by nonfatal victims of attempted or completed violent crimes or property crimes totaled 338,700. Apparently our “civilized” nation would sacrifice close to 3 million people so that 300,000 can claim the 2nd Amendment. The V.P.C. also found that in 2010 “there were only 230 justifiable homicides involving a private citizen using a firearm” reported to the F.B.I.’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program. Compare that with the number of total firearms homicides in the same year: 11,078. That’s not counting gun suicides or unintentional shootings. http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/fv9311.pdf
The NRA lobby is holding the country hostage to their demands. WHAT will it take?
When will the mothers and fathers hit the streets and demand stronger conditions for gun ownership? When will hunters speak up for standards of necessity for their food or sport without supporting the violence of a gun industry? When will we stop the constant feeding of violence on TV, movies and video games? The average child/teen video gamer has virtually KILLED more “humans” than a soldier on the battlefield, and has seen more gore and horror than any other generation. No worries you say, they become immune to it. Do you really want a society immune to committing violence? I hope not.
We need to stop feeding our minds with fear, hopelessness, violence, and racism and expecting different results. WHAT are we going to do about it?
