This workbook is designed to awaken us from a trance imposed by a 5200-year system of patriarchy embodied in men, women and the culture itself. Patriarchy is an imbalanced cultural system that is based on a left-brain dominated consciousness, which sees through a filter of separation, hierarchy and domination. As we evolve, humanity is expanding our learning to integrate the right-brain with its qualities of inclusion, relatedness, intuition and partnership.
This awakening process is about taking responsibility for longstanding limiting beliefs and cultural conditions that we have accepted. It is not about blaming men.
Not only have women and girls been impacted by our culture of imbalance, but men and boys have been impacted too – emotionally and by the roles they are expected to play. We all live within a system of cultural conditioning that imposes unwritten and written rules which assign roles and behaviors to both genders that are very limiting to both.
Though males are given privilege and status within this hierarchy, inherent in this model is the rejection of certain so-called “feminine” aspects of their humanity. Men have been socialized to suppress their vulnerability, capacity for nurturing and expression of feelings other than anger. A patriarchal culture mandates that males avoid any association with things deemed “vulnerable” and present themselves as invincible and almost superhuman.
At the same time, women are socialized within this model to quiet our authentic voices, please others at our own expense, and live our lives in caretaking roles. As we act from these roles we lose touch with our own wants and needs in the service of being “good.” As women numb to our own needs and passions, a kind of robotic sleepwalking becomes a way of life.
Under the spell of patriarchy both genders lose access to integral aspects of their wholeness as human beings. This imbalance can be effectively addressed by initiating conversations about how both men and women are impacted by the unwritten and written rules of patriarchy. We understand that a movement toward integrating both feminine and masculine qualities within both genders will play a significant role in upgrading our evolution as whole humans, and thereby will create a more sustainable future.
To this end, we envision men as whole humans, who claim heart, vulnerability, sensitivity, nurturing, inclusion, equality and access to all of the emotions, adding to their strength and logic. We envision women of heart who accept these men and who themselves flow with these traits. We envision women who claim their own power, speak their truth with clarity, and can speak the powerful word “no” in protection of their personal and physical boundaries. We envision women who feel and are safe enough to be powerful in their own behalf, and in behalf of all life.
This curriculum is offered in the service of these intentions.
We believe that initiating conversations about the impact of patriarchy is an important foundational step in moving toward this new upgraded human consciousness and planetary balance. Just as the conversation about racism was crucial in making inroads into the effects of racism, so too will initiating the conversation about the system of patriarchy create inroads into the effects of this imbalanced system. In this way, our sons, grandsons, brothers, fathers, husbands will have more access to the relational, nurturing and sensitive aspects of their humanity; and our daughters and granddaughters, sisters, mothers, and wives will be free to claim their power, voices, and choices in a world that values them and in which they are safe.
